Translating Atmosphere into Imagery
Created for Astera, Chef Aaron Adams’ celebrated botanical tasting menu restaurant in Portland, this series documents a fine dining experience built around atmosphere and craftsmanship. The assignment encompassed interiors of the new dining space, a selection of hyper-seasonal dishes, and an expressive chef portrait, with a focus on preserving the character that has made the restaurant one of the city’s most sought-after reservations.

CREATIVE CONTEXT
Astera draws inspiration from a tradition shared by many of the world’s most celebrated fine dining restaurants: cultivating curiosity through concealment. Curtains remain drawn throughout service, creating an experience defined by a deliberate separation from the outside world.
The challenge was creating imagery that felt elevated and editorial while remaining faithful to that experience. Rather than introducing natural light or large diffused sources, we embraced the restaurant’s existing mood, using light to shape the environment without sacrificing the mystery that defines it.
The resulting images translate Astera’s atmosphere into a cohesive visual language for editorial, marketing, and press use.
